Karate belt FAQs
How do I choose a martial arts school?
Choosing a martial arts school is not something that should be done
lightly. There are four main factors that should be considered before
you choose the school that will be best for you. The first thing to
consider is the environment in which you will learn and be trained.
The second factor is the people with whom you will learn. The third
is the instructor and the last is the logistics of the school. Where
exactly each item ranks on your own list is up to you, but as a rule
of thumb, if you are not comfortable with your teacher and with your
fellow students, you may not have a positive experience.
Should children study martial arts?
Most definitely! Martial arts can teach your children a number of positive
characteristics, including control, patience and self-respect. However,
the question about the style of martial arts a child should take is
a different question. If the parents study martial arts, then it would
be beneficial for the child to study the same things as the parents,
but this is negotiable. The biggest issue when deciding on if your child
should study martial arts or not is if the instructor is somebody you
trust to help mold your child.
My instructor insists on counting in Korean and I’m supposed
to learn the numbers. What are they?
Many instructors like to keep the martial arts as close to their original
roots as possible. One of the ways that some do this is by using Asian
languages for counting and saying other important words. If your instructor
wants you to count in Korean, here are the numbers 1-10.
1. hanah, 2. dool, 3. set, 4. net, 5. dasot, 6. yosot, 7. ilgop, 8.
yodol, 9. ahop, 10. yool.
